The State of the Union is the address presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, typically delivered annually. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows presidents to outline their legislative agenda (for which they need the cooperation of Congress) and their national priorities. The address fulfills rules in Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, requiring the President to periodically give Congress information on the “state of the union”and recommend any measures that he believes are necessary and expedient.
The State of the Union Address is probably known to you as that time when “the president is on (!)” and there is nothing to watch on tv. Although it is an important time for the entire nation it has become nuisance to most.
The health and future of our nation should always be of interest to us, but even more so the health and direction of our spiritual lives and the Lord’s church. The Old Testament is filled with examples of how comfort leads to apathy that leads to decline that leads to immorality (see the book of Judges). God raised up reformers for his people then, and we should pray for him to raise up reformers for us now (Matthew 9:37-38).
What is the spiritual state of our union? Our congregations? Our church? Our families? Ourselves? If you and God are not satisfied, be the reformer God raised up.
